Sausage Party 2: Seth Rogen's Story Pitch, TV Spinoff & Everything We Know (2024)

The original Sausage Party proved to be a surprise smash hit, but Sausage Party sequel updates have been extremely infrequent despite the first movie's huge success. The 2016 movie is an R-rated comedy that follows some sentient food products, led by a sausage named Frank (Seth Rogen), who discovers what happens to food once customers take them home from the store. The movie combines filthy, R-rated humor with a Pixar-style animated adventure tale. The movie is best remembered for the infamous food orgy scene at the end, which originally caused the film to receive an NC-17. However, despite the first movie's notoriety, a Sausage Party sequel hasn't appeared.

Sausage Party's adult comedy ends with a meta twist, as the main characters come to realize they’re cartoon characters and set off into the real world to seek the actors who voice them. This cliffhanger note and the movie’s success suggested Sausage Party 2 was inevitable, but the teased Sausage Party sequel still hasn't materialized years after the 2016 release of the first movie. The current status of a Sausage Party sequel isn't entirely clear, but there is a potentially great TV series in the works.

Sausage Party sequel updates aren't actually relating to an actual movie follow-up to the 2016 animated movie at all. Instead, an animated series is in the works called Sausage Party: Foodtopia, which is set in the same world as Sausage Party and will likely see a lot of the original cast reprising their roles in the episodes. The show will be available to watch on Amazon Prime Video, it will still be produced by Rogen and his producing partner Evan Goldberg too, and it has a release window of 2024 with eight episodes planned, or, as Rogen called it in a tweet, an "eight-course television event."

The most exciting Sausage Party sequel updates come from Rogen, who made some big statements about the Amazon Prime Video series. The actor explained (as reported by TVInsider) that it'll be way more crude and vulgar than the movie, noting, "We’ve decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. It’s got all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it’s exactly what the world needs right now." Amazon Prime Video has made a habit out of delivering extremely entertaining and mature content, such as The Boys, so it's likely that Rogen will totally deliver on that hyperbolic promise.

Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell, and Yassir Lester have all officially signed on to voice brand-new characters in Sausage Party: Foodtopia. Rogen, Salma Hayek, Paul Rudd, and so many other A-list actors who had voice roles in the original movie will likely return for the series too. While the Rogen is light on proper Sausage Party sequel updates, Sausage Party: Foodtopia could be better than any official movie sequel.

Sausage Party 2 Probably Won't Happen

Since Sausage Party is returning for a TV series with Sausage Party: Foodtopia, the odds of Sausage Party 2 happening are now low. Rogen and Goldberg have historically liked to focus on new ideas and the reception to Neighbors 2 only reinforced that. They also feel part of the reason Sausage Party was a hit was that it was something new, a computer-animated adventure with an R-rating. Sausage Party 2, on the other hand, would lose that freshness by virtue of being a follow-up. They hadn’t completely ruled it out in the past, but it's hardly surprising that there haven't been many Sausage Party sequel updates given how mixed the reception was. Now that Foodtopia has been announced too, it's likely that any hints the pair gave over the years ended up manifesting as the new Sausage Party series due on Prime Video.

Seth Rogen Had A Story Concept For Sausage Party 2

Seth Rogen and his writing/producing partner Evan Goldberg revealed one of the reasons the original ending was cut was to save the idea for Sausage Party 2. It also would have locked them into an opening scene where the gang immediately finds their real-life actors. Rogen also revealed the adult cartoon Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is one of his favorite movies, so a Sausage Party sequel could be a similar mix of live-action and animation, with the gang setting out on a new adventure in the real world to meet their creators. However, that might have been a little too similar to This Is the End. It's unclear whether Sausage Party: Foodtopia will follow this plot.

Neighbors 2 Turned Rogen Off Making Sequels

Despite making hit comedies with sequel potential, Rogen and Goldberg have only made one sequel with Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. They prefer to work on original material and have resisted making follow-ups to Pineapple Express and Superbad, despite demand. They gave sequels a try with Neighbors 2, but the movie grossed less than half of the original. In a similar fashion to swearing off big-budget movies following their unhappy experience making Green Hornet (which is getting a reboot), Neighbors 2 kept the duo from making more sequels. Rogen also said that if they were going to take the time to make another animated movie, it would be an original concept.

Seth Rogen's Next Foray Into Animation After Sausage Party Wasn't Met Well

After Sausage Party, Rogen dipped his toes into the animation game once again with the HBO Max series Santa Inc — and it flopped. While Sausage Party was certainly controversial upon its release (all but ruining the possibility of a Sausage Party sequel), it was still well-received by audiences. Most critics had little nice to say about the crass humor of Santa Inc and was universally panned. Unlike Sausage Party, Santa Inc didn't have a small-but-highly-amused fanbase backing its corner. It also lacked the uniqueness of Sausage Party's premise — Bad Santa came out almost two decades ago, and a new raunchy adult-oriented Xmas movie or show has arrived yearly since.

While it's purely speculative, the poor reception of Santa Inc may have put a damper on any hunger for a Sausage Party sequel at the studio end. Rogen is a talented creator who has pumped out hits like Pineapple Express, the long-awaited Superbad, and The Interview. However, both of his animated projects have been seen as commercial failures with few redeeming qualities. While Sausage Party: Foodtopia may turn things around (as might his upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, TMNT Mutant Mayhem), Seth Rogen's live-action forays have so far gone down much smoother than his animated ones with audiences. Rogen is still known for his iconic voice work in many animated movies too, so his legacy in the genre is cemented regardless of whether or not Sausage Party 2 happens.
